As of February 7, 2025, the Gaza-Israel conflict has gone through a 15-month-long war that has caused severe casualties and widespread destruction. A ceasefire, mediated by the United States, Egypt, and Qatar, was announced on January 15, 2025, and officially took effect on January 19. This agreement initiated the release of hostages by Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Humanitarian Impact:

  • Casualties and Displacement:
The conflict has resulted in over 47,000 Palestinian fatalities and displaced approximately 1.9 million residents, making up for about 90% of Gaza's population.
  • Infrastructure Devastation:
Approximately 69% of Gaza's buildings, including over 245,000 homes, have been damaged or destroyed, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis.
  • Political Developments:
In a controversial move, President Donald Trump proposed that the US take control of Gaza to facilitate its reconstruction, suggesting the relocation of its residents to nearby countries. This proposal has been met with widespread international condemnation, with critics labeling it as a form of ethnic cleansing.
  • Ongoing Negotiations:
Hamas has announced the commencement of the "second phase of negotiations" with Israel to solidify a sustainable ceasefire. Key discussion points include the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the exchange of prisoners. Israel maintains that it will not fully withdraw until Hamas's military capabilities are dismantled and opposes Hamas's involvement in Gaza's reconstruction.
